Interested in learning how to swing the Gada or a heavy mace? We’ve got you covered! At Dutch Flow Academy we’ve got an extensive course collection for both your own skill and your teaching skill. This belt system is specifically related to the Gada Flow category and should not be compared to the other categories.

If you’ve never swung a Gada before, you’re a White Belt. Two-handed swings go up to the Orange Belt, and single arm swings start at the Green Belt. The higher belts connect advanced single arm swings with leg work like pivots and lunges.

Coach Harbert is an expert in making what's hard, simple. Many of the exercises that I thought I knew were put under a different lens by thinking about them in terms of landmarks, directions and positions. It really helps tremendously to help your own exploration practice. If gada/mace flowing is what you are after, you are definitely in the right place. This is by far the best source for steel mace exercises I have seen in my life.

At Dutch Flow Academy we offer an incredibly in depth and detailed certification for the mace. It’s never done before on this level. There’s three Mace Certifications:

  • In Person Level 1 Certification that involves an all inclusive weekend with like minded individuals to learn how to teach and experience what it is to be part of a community. This includes Mace Flow 101 and Gada Flow 101.
  • Online Level 1 certification that involves a massive online course with eight other instructors moving through three months of training and guidance with the mace including online calls. This includes Mace Flow 101 and Gada Flow 101.
  • In Person Level 2 Certification that is the next level. Here we break down single arm swings, how to set up workshops and a lot more. This includes Mace Flow 201 and Gada Flow SIX.

What is a Gada?

This is a great question. The answer is: it depends. There are ancient South Indian Marital Arts practices that train with a small wooden Gada to be able to hit and fight with it. This type of Gada is also associated with Hanuman, the Hindu God of strength and devotion. It symbolizes unshakable power, unwavering focus, and divine protection, inspiring generations to strive for greatness. In the North of India you'll find giant stones with a bamboo stick inside of them and they swing them over the shoulder. This is what is usually referred to in the Western world as a Gada.

At Dutch Flow Academy we've decided to call a Gada any type of mace, steel mace, macebell or Gada that is 110cm or longer and where the weight is significant (7-8kg and above). Adjustable maces are a good example for this. But any type of wooden or steel mace that falls into that category will do. The goal is to make the distinction between Gada and Mace Flow, where Mace Flow is practiced with a lighter and smaller mace.

What is Gada Flow?

The practice of Gada Flow then, is to flow or connect the movements together that are possible with a Gada. The length and the weight create the added benefit of being able to load up in weight or volume. This comes also with a limited arsenal of movements compared to Mace Flow. The Gada courses, then focus on movements that are possible with these Gada's and teaches you how to connect them together. How to use your legs with the Gada, and even how to pivot with it.

Some of these movements have been practiced for at least a thousand years with similar tools. Others have been added from modern, western movement science. Together this creates a wonderful blend of the ancient and the modern all packed together in a course package with movie quality production and expert coaching. You'll be surprised how much is possible with these heavy maces or Gadas.

The Flowing Dutchman Gada Mace
Harbert Egberts

Harberts life changed dramatically when he reached the age of 21. After a tough breakup he was forced to look deeply at himself for the first time. This altered his state of consciousness as he now shifted from a mindset of scarcity and victimhood to an empowered human being that was able to transform himself through action and discipline. He decided to not pursue his laid out university career and follow his passion instead: personal development, fitness and philosophy. This led him to start Dutch Flow Academy in 2017 and teach people how to move and use unconventional tools. Around that time he discovered the mace and clubs and started to train and coach with it. Soon enough he traveled to India and the USA to learn more about this amazing tool and its history. This propelled him on a journey of teaching workshops all around the world, creating online courses, travel to India seven more times, and teach Certifications for Dutch Flow Academy. He's a well known, sought out, and respected coach in the swinging arts. The journey is still unfolding and he can't wait to have you on board and help spread the art of the mace.
